The third conditional is used to talk about past situations and how they could have been different depending on whether the condition was met or not.

structure:

IF + PAST PERFECT + WOULD HAVE + PAST PARTICIPLE

  • If I wasn't so busy, I would have gone to the movies.
  • If my brother hadn't been lied to before, he would have believed me.
  • If you had worked harder, you would have passed your exam.
  • If he left class early he wouldn't be late home.
  • If I had been invited to the party on Saturday I would have gone.
